Bradley Christensen, Captain Corcoran

Can love level ranks? Must lowly seaman Ralph Rackstraw pine in vain for Josephine, his captain’s lovely daughter, who, after all, has been promised by her father to Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty.

This musical farce is a love story, a lesson in rank and in the proper ways of doing things. It also shows how to stand up for the desires of the heart. With witty dialogue and memorable tunes, you won’t want to miss the silliest shenanigans ever seen aboard a ship!

Since its première in 1878, Gilbert and Sullivan’s wildly popular operetta has delighted audiences with its nautical tale of love. Running for 571 performances, it was the second-longest run of any musical theatre piece up to that time.

LOOSE TEA MUSIC THEATRE

Description as of the LooseTeaMusicTheatre website.
As an ambitious and strong willed women, Carmen, who works as a bartender, is working towards owning her own establishment. John Anderson is a PTSD war vet who is homeless on the streets of Toronto. He finds hope in Carmen who he becomes obsessed with. Carmen navigates a patriarchal society and is ultimately overtaken by John’s possessive jealously, which leads to her untimely death.

Although Carmen is her own strong independent woman, our history, stories and perspectives as women have been told through the lens of a patriarchal society on the backdrop of sexism and internalized misogyny.

A contemporary look at the normalization of harassment that women face everyday, these elements feed the culture that continuously makes women victims for being themselves. In Carmen #YesAllWomen, Loose Tea strives to give the opportunity for Carmen’s story to be told through her eyes, as a strong independent woman striving and achieving within a patriarchal society and the dangers that she faces simply for doing that.

Samuel Bisson re-composes the score for two cellos and DJ/Sound Artist SlowPitchSound with a new contemporary libretto by Alaina Viau and Monica Pearce.”

ORCHESTRA TORONTO
Michael Newnham, conductor
Lesley Bouza, soprano
Andrea Ludwig, mezzo soprano
Andrew Walker, tenor
Bradley Christensen, baritone
The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir

Composed between 1822 and 1824, Symphony No. 9 is the final complete symphony by Ludwig van Bethoven. “It is regarded by many critics and musicologists as one of Beethoven's greatest works and one of the supreme achievements in the history of western music.” (Cook, 1993)

The symphony was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony - the words are sung during the final (4th) movement of the symphony by four vocal soloists and a chorus. They were taken from the "Ode to Joy", a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with text additions made by the Beethoven. The piece is a resounding cry of humanity, celebrating universal brotherhood and sisterhood.

La Bohème is a tragic love story of Mimí and Rodolfo.
Set in Paris in the 1830s, four arty types shiver in their Latin Quarter garret; the artist Marcello, the poet Rodolfo, Colline, a philosopher, and Schaunard, a musician. Trying to keep warm on Christmas Eve, they feed the stove with pages from Rodolfo’s latest drama. For these young bohemians, art is life! It’s a timeless story that celebrates free-spirited creativity and expresses the romantic power of love. With some of the most glorious music ever composed, it has made its way to being one of the most popular operas ever written.

B MINOR MASS

CHORAL CONNECTION
Hugh Van Pelt, conductor
Chelsea Van Pelt, soprano
Whitney O’Hearn, mezzo
Chris Fischer, tenor
Bradley Christensen, bass

“One of the Baroque period's most celebrated choral masterpieces, this Mass was Bach's last major work before he died.” (Classic FM)

The Mass in B minor (BWV 232) is a musical setting of the complete Ordinary of the Latin Mass, composed around 1748–49, a year before his death in 1750. When the work is heard in its entirety, the listener comes away with the impression that this is a piece of music the composer had been building up to writing for the whole of his life. Sadly though, Bach never heard the Mass performed in its entirety. The complete B Minor Mass was first heard in Leipzig, Germany, in 1859.

The concert on April 19, 2019 will be conducted by Hugh Van Pelt, and performed by CHORAL CONNECTION. Formed in the spring of 2003, CHORAL CONNECTION is a local choir made up of singing enthusiasts from St. Thomas and the surrounding area.

THE BIRTH OF CHRIST is a work composed by Andrew T. Miller in celebration of Christmas. It retells the biblical story of the birth of Christ. After a prologue with voices and orchestra there is the Annunciation of John followed by the Annunciation of Christ, the Visitation, a lovely song for the Virgin Mary, the exhilaration of 'Rejoice!' followed by the Journey to Bethlehem, the Birth, the Shepherd's Song and a final reprise of the opening.

This will be a rare opportunity to hear such an incredible piece. And with the excellent Masterworks of Oakville Choral Group providing the foundation, you'll be swept by the beauty of the work.

For tickets, click here.

"I can't get over how beautiful Andrew T. Miller's The Birth of Christ is. There are several tracks of the live performance I've set to repeat. If the work were to be performed anywhere within half a day's distance from my home, I'd definitely make arrangements to see it. Andrew T. Miller's The Birth of Christ is that good."

On July 1, 1916, Newfoundland became victim to one of the most devastating losses of the First World War. During the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, at the beginning of the Somme Offensive, in just a matter of minutes, thousands of young men were ruthlessly mowed down while attempting to drive back German soldiers on the Western Front. "More than 800 Regiment soldiers clambered out of the trenches and ran towards enemy lines. Famously, just 68 were able to answer roll call the following day." (Julie Skinner, CBC News)

Ours, composed by John Estacio and playwright Robert Chafe, tells the story of Catholic priest Thomas Nangle and his roll in helping locate and bury those who died in Beaumont-Hamel.

Bizet's Carmen is radically re-visioned by Loose TEA Music Theatre who is offering a change from the familiar perspective of this opera. Carmen will be presented as not just a love story. It is also a class story, a gendered story, one that is driven by inequality and abuses of power; by conflict, struggle, and hope.

This Carmen comes with a new 21st century musical integration of various sound worlds. With DJ SlowPitch, a synthesizer, and rapping, this is a unique perspective on an opera classic.
